Are Physical Therapist and Assistants Artists?

This week we had a University friend visit, who commented how the value of art and science is observable and "felt" from her first visit to a PTW clinic.

Walking in to any of our clinics, you see a welcome sign to the customers, celebrating their first visit.

Glance left, you see a copper ship's bell, customers pull to celebrate achievements.

Looking up, you see a painted highway of hundreds of pictures (the PTW Road to Recovery) showing any past customer crazy enough to let us take their picture, celebrating their completion of care.

Around here, we debate if the value we deliver is in the art or the science.

If the value is in the Art, then through definition, the value may not be the road or bell, but rather the emotional happiness felt by our customers.

If the value is demonstrated in the science, then through definition of science success may be in the more measurable things, like the enthusiastic hop in a first step without a cane.

Either way, for a successful PT visit, episode, or outcome, one cannot exists without the other.

Our customers don't care how much we know, but they feel how much we care.

Hearing Loss

Admitted weakness number 34 of myself and high on the lost of so many others who reflect;  many of us don't hear well.
Image result for free images of an ear"

Shake my hand, tell me your name, chances are I  forget your name by the time we exchange pleasantries.

Many years ago, I tried to put your name into a bucket, A, B, or C.  I visualized something you said, made it rhyme, put your name into a relevant bucket, and visualized you in that bucket through rhyme.  Somewhat worked, mostly not.

Met a couple last night who had common connections with my wife and I, meaningful stories that make me want to learn more.

Yup, this morning, my name buckets are empty.

I remember their stories, remember why I want to connect with them, what I want to learn from them later, and of course giving me a reason to share dinner someday with my wife and some new friends.

Screams loud for me; slow down.

My DISC assessment already tells me what I need to know, I am impulsive.  Too quick to judge, too quick to the next topic, so much to learn.

In a Physical Therapists world, listening is a top 5% requirement.  First visit, second, third and so on, we are challenged to find ways to listen better, it's a full time pursuit.

In order to really fix my hearing loss, today I have two missions:
Get my buckets filled; and explore best strategies to listen...... to understand

After all, dinners with new friends are better than dinners alone!

Hand outs; Money and Time

What's the difference between a handout of money or a handout of time?

Walk down any major city street for a few hours, there is a chance you get asked to give money to a homeless guy or gal a dozen or more times.

Sometimes you pull out a few bucks, have a quick chat, hear a story, offer encouragement, then go about your day.  If it happens too many times, soon your wallet has emptied and you have nothing left.

Walk into work, there is a chance two people will ask you for a minute of your time, you gladly oblige.

Sometimes you arrange your day, meet at their request, have a quick chat, hear a story, problem solve, offer solutions, then go about your day.  If it happens too many times, soon your time is gone, you have nothing left, but maybe an unproductive day.

Minimizing non-essential conversations is a skill, and done with intentionality, it will help a PT manage their patients better, their administrative time better, and enjoy their work with abundance.

Practice it.
